Habi-Tours

Habitat for Humanity houses around the world are built according to the same guiding principles:

  • Simple.
Habitat houses are modestly-sized. They are large enough for the homeowner family's needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.
  • Decent.
Habitat for Humanity uses quality, locally-available building materials. Habitat house designs reflect the local climate and culture.
  • Affordable.
The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes and no-profit loans make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat houses.

Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County homes are generally  900 to 1200 square feet homes consisting of two to three bedrooms, and two to three bathrooms (depending upon family size). Habitat’s guidelines dictate that a 3-bedroom Habitat house may have no more than 1,050 square feet of living space. The home is typically built using wood frame construction, gypsum board interior walls, vinyl siding and asphalt shingle roofs.

Habitat for Humanity’s commitment to build with people in need readily extends to those with disabilities. Houses built in partnership with families with disabilities include additional accessibility features.

Energy Efficient Homes.  Habitat Iredell uses building strategies that provide healthy indoor air quality, durability and energy efficiency for homeowners. In addition, we are consistently exploring other practical and affordable green building options. We are fortunate to be a part of the North Carolina HealthyBuilt Homes Program. Under this program our homes are built to meet strict performance guidelines and undergo third-party verification to ensure durability and efficiency. Additionally, we participate in North Carolina’s System Vision/Advanced Energy program. System Vision is a North Carolina initiative designed to bring their knowledge and experience to a deserving, but often underserved, local population. The goal with this program is training and technical support leading to improved health, safety, durability, comfort and energy efficiency of affordable homes. Participating in System Vision gives Habitat the ability to apply science and decades of experience to deliver practical solutions.
